Day 2 | 09:00 AM - 10:15 AM

Better access: Infrastructure & logistics

  • Discussion Points: From deteriorating rural roads and rail infrastructure to bottlenecks at harbours, South Africa’s agricultural sector is negatively affected by a lack of investment in efficient logistics. Production areas are often far from the main consumers and export markets, and a breakdown in logistics can have dire consequences for producers. Facilitator, Theo Vorster, will ask industry experts about the impact of logistics on the sector and what can be done to overcome this challenge.

Day 2 | 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM

Let’s fix it: The regeneration of rural communities

  • Discussion Points: Consolidation of farming enterprises coupled with higher mechanisation is leading to fewer job opportunities in rural towns and rapid urbanisation. This leaves many rural areas in a state of disrepair because of a shrinking economic base and dwindling economically active population. Facilitator Theo Vorster will talk to experts about some community projects that made a difference, as well as how these projects can set an example for others to follow.

Diversification and the integration of livestock

Integrating livestock into a grain business can add value to lower potential farmlands and improve overall cashflow. Facilitator, Theo Voster will talk to livestock specialists about the challenges, rewards and practical planning involved in this kind of diversification.
